12 Interesting Information about Brazil

During their wandering in the Brazilian cities, Brazil Metro team is allowed to learn more about this country and get interesting and exciting new facts beyond its fame of Brazilian football and samba.  These are some of the interesting facts about Brazil that the team has collected.

  1. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of population (about 210 million people) and geographical area (8514837km2). It is bounded by every other country in South America with the exception of Ecuador and Chile, a problem with a total of 47 per cent of the continent.
  2. The highest mountain in Brazil is Pico da Neblina (Mist Peak) on the border with Venezuela, with a height of 2994 meters above sea level. Due to being covered with clouds almost always, it was not discovered until 1950 and was going up to it for the first time in 1965 after 12 years of climbing Mount Everest.

  3. Building Brasilia, capital of Brazil, took only 41 months, that is from 1956 until 1960.
  4. Brazil is the largest coffee exporter in the world for more than 150 years. It was the supplier of about 80 per cent of world coffee in the twenties of the twentieth century. This figure dropped to about one-third.
  5. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world in terms of the abundance of water that is discharged. It flows around 209,000 cubic meters per second to the Atlantic Ocean. This Exuberance is enough to fill Lake Baikal - the deepest lake in the world - in less than four years. During the rainy season, the width of the river reaches 48 km.

  6. There is no bridge over the course of the Amazon River. In 2011, a bridge length of 3.5-km was opened on one of the tributaries of the river, (Rio Negro). However, the main course of the river is still without bridges.
  7. Brazil is one of the world's most biologically diverse countries with the presence of more than 4 million species of plants and animals, according to estimates.

  8. Rio de Janeiro has become a World Heritage site in 2012. Its annual carnival attracts about 2 million people every day.
  9. Brazil has the world's most successful football team. The national team has won the FIFA Cup five times, surpassing all teams and achieving the world's first ranking.
  10. Statue of Christ (Christ the Redeemer) in Rio de Janeiro is the seventh wonder of the world. It is 38 meters long and weighs 645 tons. The statue took five years to be built and was opened in 1931.

  11. In 2004, the Brazilian Government tried to sell an aircraft carrier, weighing 16,000 tons by eBay site. The bid was 4Million £ before the withdrawal of the declaration.

  12. In 2005, the Brazilian Government announced that the fifth of the rainforests in Brazil had been eliminated because of their removal for agriculture, housing and other purposes.
